Regional and international condemnations mounted following the attack that targeted the home of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok province, amid warnings of security repercussions that threaten Iraq’s stability at a time of rising regional tension.
The attack, carried out by a drone, was described as a dangerous development because it targeted a high-level sovereign site, reflecting a shift in the nature of attacks that now target senior state figures and symbols, not just military sites.
The incident coincided with rising tension in the region against the backdrop of the confrontation involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, heightening fears that Iraq could slide into an arena for settling regional scores.
Reactions quickly widened, underscoring the sensitivity of the incident and its connection to complex internal and regional balances.
International condemnations and warnings of destabilization
The US State Department condemned the attack, saying it was carried out by “Iran-linked militia proxies,” and described it as a direct assault on Iraq’s sovereignty and stability.
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as “unacceptable,” warning of the risks of dragging Iraq into regional escalation and stressing the need to protect its sovereignty.
Britain also condemned the attack, calling for urgent de-escalation to preserve stability, while Turkey, through Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, stressed its support for the security of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Notably, Iran also condemned the attack, but blamed the United States and Israel for it, in a continuation of the competing narratives between the parties.
Iraqi positions: a direct threat to the state
Domestically, condemnations poured in from various Iraqi political forces, with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani describing the attack as a “serious assault” and announcing the formation of a joint investigative committee.
National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji said the attack was “an escalation targeting Iraq’s unity,” calling for a firm stance to hold those responsible accountable.
Political forces also warned that the continued activity of armed groups operating outside state control would undermine stability and directly threaten state institutions.
Kurdish messages: the attack goes beyond the personal dimension
Within the Kurdistan Region, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani stressed that the attack was “terrorist and cowardly,” affirming the region’s right to defend itself.
Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani went further, considering the repeated attacks to be “an explicit act of hostility” toward the region, and calling on Baghdad to take a decisive position to stop them.
For his part, Bafel Talabani warned that these practices threaten security and stability, calling for a joint investigation to identify those responsible.
Iraq amid regional pressures
The attack comes as part of a series of drone and rocket attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region in the recent period.
Estimates indicate that these operations reflect an effort by Iran-linked armed factions to impose new power dynamics inside Iraq and tie it more closely to the ongoing regional conflict.
In this context, Iraqi parties warned against attempts to “drag the country” into a broader confrontation, which could exacerbate the fragility of the security situation and reproduce cycles of violence.
Amid these developments, the Iraqi state is under pressure and bears responsibility for reining in the Iran-backed factions, restoring its monopoly over security decision-making, and preventing the country from becoming an arena for settling Tehran’s regional scores.
