Calls for the release of Yemeni activist Fatima Al-Arouli are growing, both from rights groups and political figures, as she remains in Houthi detention for nearly four years amid serious concerns about her health and no sign of any improvement in her detention conditions.Activists have launched a campaign demanding her immediate release, warning that her continued detention under these conditions threatens her life, especially amid reports that she suffers from chronic illnesses and has been subjected to severe psychological pressure inside prison.Health struggles and harsh isolationAccording to those leading the campaign, Al-Arouli suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as psychological disorders that have worsened during her detention, while strict restrictions are being imposed on visits and communication with her family. The Houthi group recently announced, through the traffic police in Sana’a, that it had prepared a study to allocate buses for women only, in a move it said was aimed at protecting women’s privacy and promoting what it described as the “faith-based identity.”
Sources say her children have not been able to visit her or communicate with her since her arrest, which has deepened her psychological suffering and raised growing concerns about her ability to endure the detention conditions for much longer.
The campaign says these restrictions do not take into account her situation as a mother or her health condition, and is calling for urgent intervention by human rights organizations to press for her release, or at least for improved detention conditions.A controversial trialFatima Al-Arouli was arrested in August 2022 at one of the checkpoints at the entrances to Taiz province, before being transferred to Sana’a, where she was tried and sentenced to death in December 2023.
The case has drawn broad criticism from human rights organizations, which said the trial “lacked the most basic standards of justice,” citing doubts over the charges against her as well as concerns about the integrity of the judicial procedures.
Those organizations have called for the sentence not to be carried out and for the case to be reconsidered, while ensuring her legal and human rights.Human rights advocates say Al-Arouli’s case is part of a broader pattern involving detainees in areas controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi group, particularly activists in the human rights and media fields, where prolonged detentions and controversial trials have been recorded in recent years.
Meanwhile, the Houthi group has not issued detailed clarifications about her health or detention conditions, adding to the ambiguity surrounding the case.Calls for international actionAgainst this backdrop, attention is turning to international organizations and United Nations bodies, amid growing calls for action and pressure to ensure Al-Arouli’s safety and open a clear legal path for her case.As her detention continues and demands for her release intensify, her case remains one of the most prominent open human rights files, at a time when fears for her fate are growing amid continued uncertainty over her conditions inside prison.
